7 Benefits of Fiber Training

Benefit 1: trainees learn the knowledge, skills and abilities essential to success. Because this training is tightly focused on these essentials.

What is success? Success is achieving the three goals of fiber installation: low optical power loss (a necessity for accurate transmission), low installation cost (‘do it right the first time’), and high reliability (an obvious goal). Trainees learn procedures that achieve these goals because we have learned what works…and what does not work, both in the field and in training.

Trainees learn what works from our extensive experience: field installation (more than 50,000 connectors, 100,000 insertion loss tests, 9000 splices), broad experience from our large client base (more than 11,100 trainees and clients), and the large number of training deliveries (more than 560). Because we have learned what is essential, trainees learn what is essential for success.

From our large client base, we have learned how to present training to those with experience of knowledge that ranges from none to extensive??. From this training experience, we have learned how to present information and instructions clearly, concisely, and precisely. With such presentation, trainees easily comprehend the essentials.

From our extensive training experience, (more than 560 presentations and 11,100 trainees, we have refined our instructions so that they guide trainees to successful results and to avoid installation errors.

Client requests for repeated training prove that trainees learn to be successful. One client has requested more than 30 programs. Another client has received training for more than 25 years. A third client has received training for more than 12 years. Another indication of successful training comes from clients requesting repeated training in the distant locations of Italy, Germany, South Korea, Alaska, Canada, and Hawaii. One frequent compliment has been: this training works!

Our training programs distill this extensive experience into clear, easy to understand presentations and precise, easy to follow, cookbook-like, instructions for the hands-on activities. This distillation and focus results in trainees learning how to be successful. An additional benefit of Pearson Technologies’ training is the  documentation of the essential concepts and installation procedures in the training texts. During work after training, trainees can use the texts as references and for refreshing their memories.

Benefit 2: trainees learn by doing. Learning by doing is the most effective learning. Pearson Technologies’ programs are hands-on: 55-80% of each program is spent in hands-on activities. Installation training covers all the activities from receipt of cable and connectors to evaluation of the post-installation test results to determine that they indicate proper and reliable installation. Benefit 3: trainees spend maximum time learning with minimal time waiting for shared equipment. When we began training programs in 1990, we decided to provide equipment sufficient to maximize learning. Since then, we have maintained that decision, resulting in Pearson Technologies’ programs covering increased material in reduced time. Each trainee has individual tools. Pairs of trainees share tools that can be shared without waiting more than a minute or two. When the team approach improves the learning activity, teams of 2 trainees or 4 trainees use the same tools without waiting. Examples of tools are below. Benefit 4: trainees learn from Pearson Technologies’ extensive training experience. As a result of more than 560 fiber optic presentations and his work as a Director of the Fiber Optic Association, Mr. Eric R Pearson, program developer and presenter, has been recognized as a Master Instructor by both the Fiber Optic Association and BICSI. In addition, clients rate Pearson Technologies programs highly. (See what clients say).

Benefit 5: trainees receive highly-developed and extensively-documented program texts. To improve and keep the programs current, Pearson Technologies has developed its programs continuously during the last 31 years. Examples are installation text, which is version 10, and our design PowerPoint Slide text, which is version 7.

Trainees in most programs receive 2 or 3 texts, for use and reference after training. Trainees in installation programs receive three texts: the 494-page Professional Fiber Optic Installation, v10, a 291-page PowerPoint Slide book, and a 52-page Certification and Troubleshooting Fiber Optic Networks workbook.

Benefit 6: trainees learn field-proven installation methods. The methods Pearson Technologies teaches are those that work for all trainees. In addition, we, or our professional installer associates, have used these methods during field installations. More than 7700 installer trainees have proven that these methods work. So do the 220 repeated training programs clients have requested.

Benefit 7: training may be less expensive than hiring an outside service firm. In some cases, the training cost can be less than the charges of an outside installation firm. Your personnel can learn the essential methods. As part of a training delivery, Pearson Technologies can recommend the products that are best suited to the skills and experience of your personnel. Such recommendations will lead to successful installation.
